Building Blocks of Digital Protection: Inside the EU Cybersecurity Act

The digital revolution has brought many opportunities for innovation and growth, but it has also exposed organizations to a wide range of cybersecurity threats and challenges. In response to these evolving risks, the European Union has authorized the Cybersecurity Act, an important piece of legislation aimed at strengthening the EU’s cybersecurity resilience and capabilities by creating the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA).

European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA): Overview

ENISA serves as the EU’s center of proficiency for cybersecurity, providing support, guidance, and expertise to EU institutions, member states, and private stakeholders to improve cybersecurity capabilities and address emerging cyber threats.

Stakeholders that benefit from ENISA:

  • EU countries’ institutions and authorities
  • EU countries’ decentralized bodies and agencies
  • Businesses (small and medium-sized businesses)
  • Private organizations
  • IT Industry
  • Individuals

The legislative framework, Cybersecurity Act, is created by the European Union to strengthen cybersecurity efforts and enhance resilience across member states. The Act also establishes the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) as a permanent body with an expanded mandate and resources to support member states in their cybersecurity endeavors. Additionally, the Cybersecurity Act introduces a European Cybersecurity Certification Framework, enabling the certification of ICT products, services, and processes to ensure their compliance with cybersecurity standards and requirements across the EU.

Through the establishment of the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) and the introduction of a certification framework, the EU Cybersecurity Act legislation empowers member states, businesses, and individuals with the tools and resources needed to navigate the complex landscape of cybersecurity.
